Transport for London (TfL) has launched a bid for manufacturers to design and build 24 new trams for the capital’s tram network, marking the start of a significant upgrade.
The new models, set for introduction in the late 2020s, will feature air conditioning, mobile charging points, and real-time travel updates, offering a more comfortable and reliable service. Four manufacturers, including Alstom and Hitachi Rail, are invited to tender. TfL’s Director of Capital Delivery Infrastructure, Scott Haxton, calls it a “significant step” in modernising the fleet.
Croydon’s Executive Mayor, Jason Perry, also expressed his support, citing the boost these trams would provide to the borough’s regeneration and its local economy.
The project will replace the oldest trams, which are approaching the end of their design life, with the potential for future contracts to expand the fleet if funding is secured. TfL continues discussions with the Government over long-term investment.
